works. With a commitment to providing monthly meetings,
bi-annual workshops, and other venues solely for the
purpose of subscribing to these goals. We are a diverse
organization and support all writers, regardless of
genre, who wish to hone their skills in this profession. |

Open to Fremont Branch current members with qualifying
manuscripts. ONE manuscript will be selected for
publication from each branch.
A
Marketing Plan must be submitted
with the manuscript.
50,000 words max, primarily text
Edited, proofread according to professional MS standards
• Submitted as a single file in Word or RTF
• Formatted in a simple and consistent manner per style
manual. Written for adult mainstream market
• Short non-fiction book preferred
• Other genres considered with a clearly identified
market: fiction, humor, memoir
• Disqualifying MS: screenplays, science fiction,
poetry, photo, illustrated, spiritual/religious,
cookbooks

Royalties:
Authors are paid royalties of 10% of cover price from
all retail sales; local branches are vested 5%. Authors
and branches may also order privately at a 50% discount
for personal use or re-sale at live events, Web sites,
direct mail, etc. retaining all profits.

coordinator to select manuscripts

Branches submit MSS to CWC Coordinator
Coordinator screens MSS for editorial and technical
integrity.
May-June
2010 CWC Coordinator submits
qualified MSS to UP, including contracts, cover design
suggestions, etc. Authors submit list of up to 25 U.S.
reviewers for query to Coordinator, including a specific
name and e-mail address (or fax number) for each
publication.
All materials from authors must be 110% complete and
final before forwarding to UP, rather than sent in
installments.
June-July
2010 Galleys shipped to CWC
Coordinator
Coordinator sends proofs to authors for up to 25
corrections and screens responses before forwarding
proposed changes to UP.
Aug-Sept
2010 Galleys returned to UP
UP handles galley changes and prepares
public Web content. Authors
submit lists for add'l press releases, primary local
news media or publications will a clear, direct focus on
the subject matter.
Sept-Oct
2010 UP queries
book reviewers and sends
advance copies on
request. Authors and branches prepare Web sites and
blogs prior to initial publication. Authors and branches
may order books privately at a discount for personal use
only, but hold public notices until Oct-Nov.
Oct-Nov
2010 Books released by UP as
"Special Advance Releases." UP transmits press releases.
Authors are paid royalties of 10% of cover price from
all retail sales; local branches are vested 5%. Authors
and branches may also order privately at a 50% discount
for personal use or re-sale at live events, Web sites,
direct mail, etc. retaining all profits.
Nov-Dec
2010 CWC celebrates the
tradition of
California writers with a branch
imprint of co-published books.
Dec 2010-Ongoing, 2011 With guidance from Coordinators,
authors and branches schedule monthly live events for
each book at locations other than bookstores; regular
postings to Web sites that focus on related topics; and
responses to Google news alerts, month after month.
Authors and branches are encouraged to notify UP about
nonprofits with mailing lists of 5,000+ for possible
special editions. UP will contact prospective sponsors
and handle all production and distribution, vesting the
author a full 10% of cover price, plus 5% for the local
branch and 5% for the sponsor.
Following advance release, UP periodically evaluates
book reviews, public demand (both retail and via author
or branches), media coverage and other factors. Books
that demonstrate meaningful public appeal are made
available through mainstream
online booksellers like
Amazon, in hardback and/or enlarged text editions, in
UK-EU markets, etc.
CWC Imprint Features Branch name as joint imprint.
Description of branch and a brief history of the club on
back cover. No CWC or branch logos.

California Writers Club is one of the nation's oldest professional club
for writers, founded in 1909. We are a nonprofit education
corporation with eighteen branches in California. Our
organization is dedicated to educating writers of all levels and
disciplines in the craft of writing and in the marketing of
their work. The Club has more than 1100 members.
